Skills, Safety, and Stewardship to grow your drone business.
Facebook Live Episode 8 by Alicia Amerson
Today on the Alimosphere weekly Facebook Live show I talked about Skills, Safety, and Stewardship and why it’s important to get it right the first time. I gave you three tips you can use.
PLUS I am really excited to share I have a FREE gift - it’s a checklist to get you started in thinking about your skills, safety, and stewardship when it comes to drone business.
You can ONLY get this checklist in Alimosphere’s FREE Facebook Group - The Social Innovation Drone Tribe. Click Files!
We recently posted a blog on drones for beginner, hobbyist and professionals. You can check it out our Flight Blog. Today we’re talking about the most critical part of flying drones... flight planning and why SKILLS, SAFETY, and STEWARDSHIP should be your focus.
First of all...
I LOVE talking about planning. While I was planning my Master’s degree Capstone at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2014 I wanted to use a drone for my research.
Guess what?...The regulations were not clear on how I could actually do this in 2014. Unfortunately as I looked and asked around it turned out to do it legally I needed a manned aircraft Section 333 license AND… I only had one year to collect my data and finish my grad program.
On top of that... I was a broke grad students. And manned airplane pilot license course work is EXPENSIVE and TIME CONSUMING.
THEN one day while I was collecting data I saw a funny seagull flying directly over a gray whale off the coast of Newport Beach, Ca. There was a whale-watching boat following closely behind the whale with a lot of people at the front of the boat. I was curious about this encounter and raised up my camera to take the photo and realized the sea gull was a drone!
I was surprised that it was "legally" flying over a whale. How could this be?
Back to the part where I had to get a manned pilots license to fly. I also found out from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - those are the guys who enforce the Marine Mammal Protection Act - that I needed a permit to fly over whales and that they weren’t handing those out yet because "NO ONE KNEW WHAT THE IMPACTS WERE TO THE ANIMALS."
Jump ahead to 2018 - I’ve spent two field season studying whales with drones, and two years figuring out how to create guidelines for the general drone user to reduce disturbance.
In the past four years researchers have recorded known disturbance to wildlife.
So… Before we get into how you can add SKILLS, SAFETY, and STEWARDSHIP into your flight plans I want to share with you that I have put all the templates together so that you can create flight plans that benefit humanity and respect wildlife. If you were not aware yet, there is an uptick in drones around our world, and yes researchers are finding that wildlife are disturbed - just like humans.
You can find all these goodies and more in the STRIVE Plan, an online class where you create a flight plan for your business to reduce wildlife disturbance when you fly, build a communication plan and I've included four checklists to help you through preflight to postflight operations. AND bonus information on how to green your drone footprint. Plus there’s even more, I’ve created an online community for you to get involved online in a Paid Students Only Facebook Group… and each month I am hosting a live coaching call just for you.
So Here's What Your AFTER... The Tips!
TIP #1 - The Basics of Planning a Flight
Skills, Safety, Stewardship.
I believe these three items are the foundation of every drone flight plan.
In fact you should be considering these if you are a beginner drone pilot or professional. Why do I say this… because it will improve your business and protect your fanny.
You might be thinking of ways already that you can add new Skills, Safety, and Stewardship to your drone business value propositions or you may wonder how you get started.
As promised I’ve created a checklist for you to start thinking about ways you can implement Skills, Safety, and Stewardship into your drone flight plans. And yes can get it directly in The Social Innovation Drone Tribe Facebook Group! Make sure you sign up to get this FREE gift!
Question? Do you have a specific skill in drones that sets you apart from other pilots? What is it and what do your clients say about your skill? Tell us in the comments below.
TIP #2 - A Checklist To Keep YOU Organized and Professional
You need a few things before you go to the field… in fact sometimes without my checklists I forget the most important tools or most often my SD Card.
I LOVE checklists and to-do lists. I have lists for everything. I am an idea maker so… that means I have to create lists to get all of the ideas out of my head.
If you have not started making your flight checklists, not to worry. I was in your spot before too. So what I did was a brain dump and get all of my ideas out there. I made lists about lists, lists about tools, lists about safety, lists about not forgetting the lists.
I’ve combined all these amazing lists into 4 checklists that I use in the field and guess what I am offering them to you so you can increase your flight and field success and so your drone business grows. You can find these in The STRIVE Plan online course.
If you know a client wants you shoot specific targets or areas, or if you know you have to bring that specific lens to capture a specific image ADD it to your list!
This is why lists are so GREAT they continue to change and grow as you learn.
TIP #3 Certifications to build credibility
How many certifications do we need as drone pilots? The drone industry is fairly new - AND so are the certification regulations. I get this question A LOT "What certifications do I REALLY need be a professional drone pilot.
First a drone is a tool. So make certain you have A LOT of flight time. That is equivalent to you building your SKILLS!
Just like a construction manager - he will tell you about all the certifications he has to obtain to be a professional. Or a project manager, she has to complete an intensive 12 module test - and have over 10,000 of project experience. These certifications are what make you credible and show that you're not only professional - BUT YOU'RE THE EXPERT.
How do you obtain other certifications in your industry?
There are certifications for Safety, Skills, or Stewardship that you can obtain. You can find them easily one related to your industry when you dig a bit deeper into LinkedIn, or do a Google search. Then determine what is right for you and your business.
One certification you may consider and may be mandatory by your clients is CPR and First Aid. It can be obtained at a community college and sometimes at the local YMCA. This one will show your truly dedicated to SAFETY - and while you're at it provide the opportunity for this certification to your flight crew - this shows STEWARDSHIP.
Did you know we’re giving away our FLIGHT READY CHECKLIST? You can find it on our homepage by clicking Give Me The Free Roadmap. If you can’t seem to find our bright red link on the homepage then you’ll find the link in our show notes.
QUESTION? What certifications do you need or have that increase your credibility? What’s making your clients go WOW about your skills, safety, and stewardship commitments? Tell us in the comments below!
